About West Winds

West Winds was formed in 1993 with the support of the People’s Association and Bukit Batok Community Club. The band was started with the vision to create a place where musicians in Singapore can gather for the love of band music.

One of the primary aims of West Winds is to bring music to the community by promoting an awareness and appreciation of band music. Our annual concert series entitled “West Winds in Concert” has become a highlight in the local band scene calendar.

Furthermore, the band also actively promotes band music at the school level. The “West Winds Community Series”, is the band’s school outreach programme where her musicians would visit a school and share their love and knowledge of music with the younger musicians.

The culmination of the outreach programme is a joint performance by West Winds and the school band. West Winds also regularly collaborates with Esplanade in their "Beautiful Sunday" series to offer members of the public the opportunity to enjoy free musical performances. The Community Series and our performances underline the band’s desire to contribute to the local band music scene.

Besides our local involvement, West Winds has also achieved recognition on the international stage when she was selected to perform at the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE) Conference held in Singapore in 2005. On top of this honour, West Winds has also had the privilege to work with world renown band composers and conductors such as Eric Whitacre, Jacob de Haan, Virginia Allen and Yasuhide Ito.

West Winds has remained dedicated and true to her purpose to serve the community after its 20 years of formation. The band's local and international musical endeavours are testaments of her emphasis on Friendship, Community and Music-Making.
